Wave Ceptor Atomic Watch Review

Wave Ceptor Atomic Watch

I'm a ham radio operator, and a stickler for accurate time (often setting my old digital watch to WWV on the Shortwave Bands and having considered myself lucky to have discovered a $30 Timex digital with ~1 second variance in about 1 weeks time by setting the time on the watches at the store, and coming back a few days later and checking for variation). I currently own two other WWVB (60kHz) time pieces at home with varying results (regarding reception/sync). I was a little cautious about a watch being able to recieve this very longwave signal, but it does. I live in Oklahoma City (barely within the supposed 600 mile daytime range of WWVB), and haven't had much luck with it during the daytime, but haven't had any trouble getting it to manually sync and autosync at night when I'm asleep. Last night it didn't - and I think that's because my PC on the otherside of the wall from the head of my bed puts out a tremendous amount of Radio Frequency Interference (I notice this on Shortwave, and it is just as likely to happen over the WWVB signal since my atomic clocks don't like to sync near the PC either). However, the fewtimes I've been on the otherside of the house (e.g. kitchen) and manually sync'd - it worked most of the time.

What I really like about this watch - besides the autosync feature - is that you can set a dual timezone - and they have one that is for GMT (Greenwich Mean Time - a.k.a. Universal Coordinated Time). Unlike the LON (London) timezone, try as I might, GMT won't accept a Daylight Savings Time adjustment ... which is a GOOD thing! So - next time I'm logging a contact on the radio - I just press one button and have the current GMT time to write in the log (handy for pilots also!).

Something not evident in any of the photos of this watch - it looks like it has a black dial face - but it is actually semi-transparent. At night, when I push the light button - I can actually see the Hour and Minute hands silhouettes in addition to the digital display at the bottom - all backlit with a aqua-green Elecroluminescent glow. Otherwise, the dial normally looks like a flat black dial. There is no second hand - which isn't a big issue. The light does not stay on as you hold the button down (power saving feature). All it takes is a momentary press, and it stays on for a little more than 1 second (definatly less than 2 seconds).

Another cool feature is that you can adjust the minute hand by '20 second' steps. That means there are 60x3 (or 180) little steps the minute hand takes each hour around the dial. Every 20 seconds, the minute hand makes a small 2 degree jump. This is pretty cool in my book. After I made a simple adjustment in the hand position, I've left it alone, and it's doing great! (The analog watch always sticks with the primary digital time zone - so switching to the secondary time zone view does not change your analog watch.)

There is a type of countdown timer - but it is based upon a target alarm setting (NOT like the type of timer that counts down on your microwave oven where you tell it 30 minutes and watch it countdown). However, if you've set the "target alarm" for 8 AM for when you're supposed to be at work (or set it for when you get 'off' work at 5:30), and you click over to the target alarm and activate it, and it is 10:30 at night... it tells you that you've got 9 hours and 30 minutes until you've got to be at work (sorta handy). I guess if you're into space shots - you can treat this as a handy reminder of the launch taking place into space - or if you're a ham operator waiting for an anticipated satellite flyover - set it and you can see when it is getting close. The time you set rolls over every 24 hours - so it will repeat this every day until you change it.

I've tried setting the 'Snooze' Alarm for early in the morning (when I ought to get up - but often sleep through) - and it hasn't stirred me yet. The snooze alarm, as I understand it, is supposed to repeat up to 7 times every 5 minutes (i.e. if I set it for 5:30 AM, it should go off at 5:30, 5:35, ..., and 6:00 unless I stop it). The hourly 'Signal' is two little pips - a little longer delay than I'm accustomed to hearing on most casio watches. Whenever an alarm does go off - it lasts for only 10 seconds. I gather this is an attempt to conserve battery power (supposedly rated at 2 years - but probably closer to 12-18 months if you take quite a few peeks at the dial using the light and make use of the autosync feature).

There's also a feature for tagging the current time into a memory. I haven't used this yet, but I think it would come in handy if you just started a contact and weren't able to log down the time that it started (or stopped). It could also come in handy if you were traveling and needed to gauge roughly when you left and when you arrived.

I happen to have bought the metal band version at a local super-retailer, and it was a good idea because the jewelry department lady had to remove three of the band links to get it to fit well (it was way too big for my wrist - and I'm not a small person).

If you are a world traveler and change your primary time zone to something other than the four main time zones in the Continental U.S., then be prepared to lose the ability to have autosync work. I guess the watch is only designed to work with the U.S. time transmitter. When you set the primary timezone to something outside of the U.S., it assumes you are too far to be in range to sync to the automic clock, and hence - you're stuck manually setting the time (and manually adjusting DST) as needed.

My only concern is that they don't have a dual analog/digital with the Atomic sync feature AND solar. The G-Shock's have them ... but they are way too big for my tastes (unless I was really active). This watch looks great in the office with out looking like a kid's timepiece.

The watch is elegant and gorgeous.Although I'd consider it to be a bit heavy, it isn't out of line for a Stainless Steel watch.Too bad Casio doesn't do them in Titanium. The gold tone leans more towards a "orange" gold than a "yellow" gold.Still very pretty, though. The watch arrived well protected from scratches and abrasions.

The instructions for setting the watch are spot on -- once you know how to set it!It took me 2 days of trial and error to get it right! Some of the behaviors of the watch aren't clearly spelled out in the manual. It was also helpful to dl the set up instructions in PDF from Casio as it then is on 4 normal size pages. That makes it easier to read while pressing all the buttons. So be patient on set up.

I have other Casio solar atomic watches and found that the atomic adjustment can be finicky. It works for me 95% of the time, though.I get a kick out of the watches "going to sleep" at night!

This is a watch with an "expensive" look to it!

I bought my first Wave Ceptor several years ago.I got a good deal on it but the plastic band broke about a year ago and it is designed so it could not be replaced unless you sent it back to Casio.I learned from that one. These watches keep perfect time and this band is REPLACABLE.The looks of this watch are terrific with the gold ring around the blue field.Yes, it only has the day displayed, but if you become familiar with the buttons, you can find all of the other information.Besides, if you don't know the month and the year, you need more help then this watch can give you. This is a great deal on this watch. Almost half price.I am happy.

Your Friend,
The Timekeeper

Men's Casio Square Face Atomic Watch - Silver
Average Reviews:

I am with those reviewers that would like to give a product rating of 0 if it were available. How could you give it any other rating if it doesn't work?
I am in my fifth day of trying to get the watch to recognize the time. I have three atomic watch/clocks from other companies and none of them took more than one hour to receive the correct time. This Casio flat out doesn't work!
The 2"X3" manual is a joke! Could that be the reason for a #2 font? 55 pages for a watch? Now include a second language to make it 110 pages, then seriously crease it diagonally so it will not stay open without a clamp. The fix was to get the manual online then read it from the computer screen.
Guess I will get another LaCrosse; no problems with that one.

This is a great watch.I don't wear my Patek Philippe any more because this watch is superior in some pretty basic ways.First, it is always exactly on time thanks to the radio synchronization to the atomic clock. For me this feature works perfectly, automatically, every night.Second, it will never run down or need a battery thanks to the solar power. It also looks good and is easy to read.

If you want a watch that tells the correct time, and always will, this is the one for you.

I bought this watch several months ago and I love it. The manual indicates the battery should be good for about 2 years if you let the watch sync with the atomic clock in Colorado every night (6 minutes), you use the backlight once a day (3 seconds), and the alarm once a day (10 seconds). Since the watch without atomic sync is off at most 10 seconds a month, I turn off auto-sync (avoiding the 6 minutes a day battery drain) and instead manually sync the watch roughly once a month (in other words instead of using 180 minutes I use 6 minutes a month to sync). I also rarely use the backlight or alarm. Based on past Casio watches I've owned, I'm hoping the battery will last about 6 to 10 years. In summary, great watch so far.

Casio Men's WV59A-1AV Waveceptor Atomic Digital Watch Review

Casio Men's WV59A-1AV Waveceptor Atomic Digital Watch
Average Reviews:

The watch comes with a plastic or stainless steel band....I prefer the stainless steel for only $10 more.

Watch is a little large and a bit heavy but overall nicely constructed and built to take a hit.

Display is nice and large, the backlight is adequate but a bit too soft.

Watch is easy to use and took me only a few minutes to figure out the operations.

The Casio manual is a joke.....you need an electron microscope to read the incredibly small print. You can however download a readable version from the Casio website.

Overall, this watch is not loaded with extras, but if you want one with the atomic time keeping feature that works in the US and Europe this watch is a good value.

Casio Solar Atomic Waveceptor Chronograph - Black & Yellow - Stainless Bracelet Review

Casio Solar Atomic Waveceptor Chronograph - Black & Yellow - Stainless Bracelet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my second Casio Waveceptor watch.(I bought the WVQ140BA-5B in December of 2008; it's a great watch, but a little too casual for business use.So the WVQ140BA-5B is now my sports/active/informal/at-home watch, and this WVQ600DCA-9AV is my everyday "office" watch.)

Casio is really on to something with this Waveceptor line.I seriously looked into the 'automatic' watches, because some people seem to think they're somehow better because they're associated with affluence and/or 'status'.Well, I want my watch to work for me--not me working for it!

The Casio Waveceptor line attempts to set itself to the national atomic clock up to 6 times a day; and as a result, it's absurdly accurate.Other people's watches offer a rough guesstimate at the time; the Waveceptor offers the *exact* time.Further...it's solar (and thus self-charging!)

So this watch charges itself (with regular use) and syncs itself with the atomic clock every night as I sleep?Sold!Zero maintenance. All I need to do is wear it...

Now--I do have 2 gripes (and thus it's 4 out of 5 star status).

1) This is not a watch. So don't pretend that it is one. This is a computer with an analog display. You tell the watch what to do with 4 buttons, and it talks back by pointing the second-hand at certain parts of the watch face.I consider myself more tech than most, and it took me about a day to figure out this watch.I could have *sworn* that I set my time-zone--but for whatever reason, it didn't take.So since I didn't properly set my time-zone, it didn't sync w/ the atomic clock. After a night's sleep, this reality finally dawned on me.
*So*...here are the two keys to getting the Waveceptors up and running.(1) Make sure you have the time-zone set; (2) Make sure that the watch hands are zero'd out at 12:00.Doing these should let it sync just fine.

My other gripe is that the watch is made to *look* like it has a rotating bezel, but it doesn't.Now--I know this watch has a timer...but using the bezel timer is just plain easier 99% of the time.Further, it makes it look cheap(er).Had Casio spent the extra 3 dollars in parts for a rotating bezel, it would have been a 5 star watch. And if Casio decides to make an attractive Waveceptor w/ a rotating bezel, I'll gladly buy it.

Overall...great watch.

This is a nice looking, comfortable watch that has more functions than I need.

I purchased this watch for the pool and it works great for this purpose. The user interface is very intuitive: I was able to figure out all functions without opening the manual.

I particularly like the automatic time set function. The watch receives a radio signal from the US atomic clock daily and sets the correct time automatically.

Overall, I am very happy with this watch, and at fewer than thirty dollars I consider it a great value.

I just got mine today and its a nice, simple, elegant, looking watch. This is my third watch I buy in the past 6 years I think and they have all been Casio. I give it 4 stars because it does not come with the instructions on how to adjust the band and it can be frustrating.

STEP ONE: Get a Pushpin
STEP TWO: You will find an arrow pointing out on the removable parts of the band on the inside side.
STEP Three: Put the point of the pushpin on the tiny hole going right from the arrow about 2-3 mm.
Step Four: Inside the tiny hole there will be a dot, move the pushpin point to the opposite direction of the arrow so it falls on the deepest part of the tiny hole.
Step Five: Keeping the point in the deepest part push the dot towards the arrow's direction and a small tiny piece will come out. You may change the angle of the pushpin to make it easier.
Step Six: Repeat this process on another part so you can get the segment you need out.
Step Seven: To put it back together simply connect the two segments together and insert the tiny metal piece that you took out.

I collect high quality mechanical watches but occasionally buy a quartz watch just to wear for knocking about when a good one might get damaged. Since I had never had an "atomic" watch, I thought I'd try this "entry level" one. First, it came with a Xeroxed user's manual that was for a completely different model altogether, where none of the buttons did the same thing at all. It took quite a search to locate a pdf file of the correct manual. I have now had the watch for almost a week, and it is still five minutes fast by "real atomic clock" time even though I've left it in a sunny window at least half the time. My advice: buy a more expensive model.

It has a nylon mesh and leather band, which is much nicer and more confortable. The watch is thin and as light as a feather. It works just as described and keeps great time.It sleeps at night, but wakes up easily.Since I've had it, it has shown as fully charged 100% of the time. The only negative I have is that the bezel seems to scratch more easily.Overall, this has been a good purchase.

This watch looks nice in the photo online, but the reality is that this watch looks very different physically, it is not as attractive as I saw it online. It is not what I have expected by just seeing it on Amazon. Many of the details does not match. I learned that the next time I better go to a store to see it before I buy it online.

Now I am looking for a way to sell this watch to others so I can buy another one.

Mistake I made, the reality is that you cannot see every detail in the photo.

Casio Men's WVQ400J-1 Waveceptor Atomic Dual-Time Watch Review

I was disgusted with TAG Heuer for no longer making repair parts for my favorite old watch. I was even willing to spend the ridiculous money they asked for replacing the battery and gaskets... about $100 every two years. I'll never get another TAG since they don't support their customers.

So... I looked all over, did lots of research, and found this watch had everything I was after. I love the solar power (no battery to replace) and the atomic clock synchronization (no more monthly date-changes or DST adjustments).

I found it quite easy to set up. Yes, you MUST read the manual but it's logical and easy to follow. Don't go pushing buttons without knowing for certain what you're doing and you should be okay. I especially like the setting that automatically turns on the dial lamp when it's dark and I tilt my wrist... it's totally cool. So in addition to solar power and atomic reception, it's got a tilt-angle sensor. Amazing.

The watch looks great... Amazon is selling it at a really good price: a bit over half what Casio lists it for.

My only wish is that they offered the watch with a stainless link band. I'm concerned that the weakest aspect of this is the rubber band. It's comfortable and looks fine, but I worry it'll break where I bend it back to insert the tab every time I put it on. And it's not a standard attachment, so there may be no repair option.

ADDITIONAL COMMENT AFTER LIVING WITH IT FOR SEVERAL MONTHS:
I still like this watch, but wanted to share one problem that's popped up. The large buttons on the bezel are TOO EASY TO PUSH INADVERTENTLY. Meaning, simply by bending my hand back, I can end up changing the time zone or setting off a timer. As I type this, the date has been replaced by the time zone indicator. I now must find the manual (at home in my bedside table) to resume normal timekeeping functions. This happens a LOT! I can only hope Casio designers check these listings and will create a future version with a twist-stem that locks to replace these big, fat buttons.

Otherwise, I love the watch. At such a great price, I can't justify downgrading from 5 to 4 stars.
